BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Kenny Perry, a 1982 graduate of Western Kentucky University, snapped a title drought of more than six years Sunday, claiming the PGA Tour's Buick Open with the second-best 72-hole score on the tour this season. Perry shot a 3-under-par 69 to hold off Jim Furyk and Chris DiMarco by two shots and earn his first title since the 1995 Bob Hope Classic.
A four-time winner in 15 years on tour, Perry collected the $558,000 top prize to increase his season total to $1,433,351. He moved from 40th on the money list to the top 25. After turning 41 on Friday, Perry shot 64-64 in the middle rounds to highlight his 25-under 263 at the Warwick Hills Golf and Country Club in Grand Blanc, Mich. Only Mark Calcavecchia's record-setting 28-under 256 at the Phoenix Open in January is lower this year.
Perry also earned PGA Tour wins at the 1991 Memorial and 1994 New England Classic. He was inducted into the WKU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. A native of Franklin, Ky., he also designed and built Country Creek Golf Club, a public course which opened in his hometown in April 1995.
