Bowling Green, Ky. - North Texas scored two first-half goals and added another in the second half to defeat the Western Kentucky women's soccer team 3-1 Friday night. It was WKU's first conference loss of the season, and also its first loss at home.
UNT (7-3, 4-0 SBC) set the tone early as Melinda Pina scored 58 seconds into the match to give the Lady Eagles a quick 1-0 lead. Western (11-2, 3-1 SBC) held tough, however, and was able to get on the board in the 21st minute when Allison Nellis (Fr., Louisville, Ky.) converted a penalty kick to even the match at 1-1. North Texas struck again in the 36th minute when Michelle Uselton found the back of the net off a feed from Carrie Kveton to give the Lady Eagles a 2-1 lead at intermission.
Both teams played evenly in the second half as Western stayed within a goal, but was unable to convert any scoring opportunities. UNT was able to put the match out of reach in the 72nd minute as Natalie Mitchell scored an unassisted goal to give North Texas the 3-1 victory.
"I felt that at times tonight we played our best soccer of the season," said Lady Topper head coach Jason Neidell. "North Texas played a fantastic game. They played a very controlled game on some sloppy field conditions and executed very well."
WKU returns to action at home on Sunday for a 1 p.m. (CDT) Sun Belt Conference match with Denver.
