BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Western Kentucky University freshman left-side hitter Lyndsey Broerman (Evansville, Ind./Reitz HS) will miss the rest of the 2000 volleyball season after suffering a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee during the Lady Toppers' 3-2 loss to Cincinnati Sept. 5 at E.A. Diddle Arena. Tests by team physicians confirmed the injury and surgery will be scheduled at a later date.
"We're really sad to see this happen to Lyndsey because she was just beginning to understand what she needed to do to compete at this level," WKU head coach Travis Hudson said. "This is a big blow to our team."
Broerman (pronounced BROAR-man) appeared in five matches for Western this season, averaging 0.73 kills and 0.36 blocks per game. She tallied a season-high four kills Sept. 2 against Mercer at the IUPUI Invitational and recorded a season-best two blocks at IUPUI Sept. 3. Since she played in less than 20 percent of the Lady Toppers' matches this year, she will be able to appeal to the NCAA for a medical redshirt season. If granted, Broerman would retain four years of eligibility on the Hill.
Western Kentucky (7-2) will be back in action at 7 p.m. (CDT) Tuesday against Ohio Valley Conference foe Austin Peay in Clarksville, Tenn.
