WKU women's basketball will have a pair of home games this week as they prepare to face Kennesaw State on Thursday, Feb. 6 and Jacksonville State on Saturday, Feb. 8.
WKU met both conference opponents earlier in January and won on each occasion, but head coach Greg Collins emphasizes the importance of controlling what they can control and improving on both sides of the ball.
"Our defense has been pretty solid. Throughout the year, we've gotten better at maintaining those possessions, generating turnovers, getting steals, so we've got to continue to work in those areas, making sure that we're able to maintain and extend our leads."
Collins discussed both the Owls and the Gamecocks prowess on defense, but underlined the importance of making sure his team stays in their offensive flow and continues to move the ball so that they can generate success offensively.
"We've got to take care of the ball, work for quality shots, and stick with what worked well for us at Jacksonville and Kennesaw, which was good ball movement. We've got to continue to move the ball and hunt those uncontested shots. When our assists are high, that means we're getting good quality shots, and that makes us harder to guard."
The Lady Toppers have been in close-game situations on multiple occasions this season, but Collins said that they never give up, which is why they have started to mesh through the last few weeks.
"I think this team is competitive. They're focused on being as good as we can be and competing at the highest level… I do like how this team continues to fight - regardless if we're up 15 or down five, we're going to fight. It's fun for the fans to watch that, and it makes me proud to coach players like that."
Thursday's game against Kennesaw State is set for 6:30 p.m. and Saturday's game will tipoff at 2 p.m. in Diddle Arena.
