ABOUT THE TOPS
- WKU improved to 6-2 with an 80-79 win over Evansville on Saturday, Dec. 6, inside E.A. Diddle Arena. Ryan Myers knocked down seven 3-pointers on his way to a season-high 27 points as the Hilltoppers edged the Purple Aces by one. The Hilltoppers used a 17-5 run to close the first half and an 18-6 burst early in the second to build a double-digit lead, then held off a late Evansville rally in the final minute.
- Through the first eight games of the season, WKU has been one of the nation's premier free throw teams, tying for fourth nationally with 22.2 makes on 30.4 attempts per contest. The Hilltoppers have earned at least 23 attempts in every game, including three outings with 30 or more against Tennessee Tech, Tennessee State and Vanderbilt, plus a season-high 41 attempts against Bethel (Tenn.). They have converted at least 17 free throws in all eight games, highlighted by a season-best 31 makes against Bethel, and have won the free throw battle in seven of eight contests. Their performance against Bethel marked the program's most free throws made and attempted in a game since going 36-of-45 in an 88-74 win over Tennessee State on Dec. 1, 2018.
- The Hilltoppers' depth has been a major strength early in the season, as they average 38.3 bench points per game to rank 13th nationally and second in Conference USA. WKU's reserves have provided consistent scoring punch, topping the 40-point mark four times, including 56 points against Bethel, 54 against Evansville and 46 in the season opener against Tennessee Tech. The Evansville game featured a breakout performance from Myers, who came off the bench to score 27 points, one shy of his career high, while matching his career best with seven made 3-pointers and shooting 9-of-16 from the field in a season-high 31 minutes.
- Redshirt sophomore guard Teagan Moore has been a major catalyst in WKU's 6-2 start, averaging a team-best 19.6 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. He has scored at least 15 points in every outing and posted a career-high 27 points against South Florida on day two of Battle 4 Atlantis. Moore was one of the top performers in the event, finishing second in points per game (23.0), fifth in rebounds (7.3), fifth in assists (4.0), sixth in field goal percentage (51.2%) and third in free-throw percentage (92.6%). The Dry Ridge, Kentucky, native is the third-leading scorer in Conference USA and is tied for 38th nationally in points per game. He missed all of last season due to injury after earning Conference USA All-Freshman Team honors in 2023-24.
- Freshman guard Armelo Boone was named Conference USA Freshman of the Week for three straight weeks from Nov. 17–Dec. 1. He turned in an impressive three-game run at Battle 4 Atlantis, averaging 17.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.7 assists, 0.7 blocks and 0.3 steals while shooting 45.9% from the field and 82.3% at the free-throw line. So far in 2025-26, Boone is the team's second-leading scorer at 12.0 points per game on 42.5% shooting, adding 4.5 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals per contest.
QUOTABLE
- "Obviously, back to a more normal stretch here moving forward the next two weeks. Returned from Atlantis, had a week off, probably some ups and downs, but happy to get a win versus Evansville. Got right back to it yesterday, trying to work on us, continue to get better and prepare for Marshall. Marshall is a very tough test for us. They've been playing better than what their record is. They've played nine games and they've lost three in a row, but they've played a hard schedule. They're very talented and certainly it's going to be a challenge going in there and win. Just trying to get right to it and, obviously, would be a great road win if we can go over there Wednesday night and get one." — Mahurin Family Foundation Head Coach Hank Plona, ahead of Wednesday's game at Marshall.
