HOW IT HAPPENED
Torri James, Tia Shelling, Mya Pratcher, Tatum Boettjer and Zsofia Telegdy were the first five on the court for WKU.
Longwood scored the first seven points of the game. A pair of free throws from James put WKU on the board at the 6:24 mark. The Lancers went on another 7-0 run, but Jeniffer Silva broke it up with a bucket at the 1:10 mark. Longwood made a couple of free throws, but Enni Ahervuo responded with a layup just before the end of the quarter. Longwood took a 16-6 lead into the second quarter.
Ahervuo came right back and scored the first points of the second quarter to cut Longwood's lead down to single digits. The Lancers went on a 5-0 run, but WKU went on their own 5-0 to cut it to 21-13 with 3:30 left. The teams traded baskets from there and Longwood took a 28-18 lead into halftime.
The Lancers began the second half on a 13-2 run to push their lead out to 21 with 4:59 left in the third quarter. The Lady Toppers responded with a 9-3 run to get back within 15. After trading points in the final minute of the quarter, Longwood took a 48-33 lead into the fourth.
Both teams made baskets to start the fourth quarter, but Longwood used a 13-2 run to grow their lead out to 25 points. After a bucket from Telegdy with 5:28 left, Longwood outscored WKU 19-5 to close out the game.
NOTABLES
- Jeniffer Silva led WKU in scoring with 12 points off the bench to go along with a career high seven rebounds and career high two blocks.
- Salma Khedr added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
- Torri James and Enni Ahervuo finished with seven points each.
- The team blocked eight shots in the game, the most since posting eight against FIU on March 2, 2024.
- Last season Longwood was second in the nation in forced turnovers, averaging 24.47 per game, and was third in the country in steals per game (13.5). The Lancers were disruptive on defense, notching 18 steals on 30 forced turnovers.
