BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball is set to host a charity exhibition with the Louisville Slugger Warriors on Saturday, Oct. 11 at Nick Denes Field. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. CT.
Hilltopper Baseball, along with Army ROTC, Military Student Services, College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and in partnership with the Mary E. Hensley Lecture Series, welcome The Louisville Slugger Warriors – the first and only competitive amputee baseball team in the country compiled of retired members of the armed forces and former NCAA athletes – to The Hill from Oct. 10-11 as part of the team's multi-city national tour.
Gates will open at noon, with a special bat presentation for former WKU faculty member and professional baseball player Richard Miller beginning at 12:30 p.m. A color guard presentation and national anthem performance will follow.
General admission for the event is free and open to the public, with reserved and VIP seating directly behind home plate available for fans to purchase. An all-star experience will be offered to fans for $500 and will include premium game seating, dinner with the Warriors team, a custom Louisville Slugger mini-bat, a signed Warriors hat and a photo with the team. Fans can also purchase premium seating that includes a commemorative hat for $50. Both levels will include a commemorative credential that can be picked up upon arrival and used for access to reserved and VIP seating.
Proceeds from reserve tickets and community donations will support WKU scholarships and local youth baseball.
Army ROTC will staff a donation table on-site at the event. The Hilltopper Baseball staff will also offer fans the opportunity to purchase a special-edition game hat being worn by the team the day of the game. The custom-designed hats feature the WKU Athletics 'Tops Script' logo with an American flag print interior, a baseball sport-specific Big Red logo patch on the right side of the hat, and an American flag patch on the back side of the hat. The custom game hat will only be available for purchase on-site the day of the game at this time. A portion of the proceeds from sales will be donated to the Warriors team.
WKU hosts an exclusive screening of the Warriors' winning documentary, Curveballs… Secrets to the Game of Life, on Friday night beginning at 6 p.m. in the Jody Richards Auditorium on WKU's campus. Each player in the film has overcome life-changing physical challenges, from combat injuries and accidents to congenital conditions and childhood illness. Some team members wear prosthetics while others play with missing limbs or implanted supports. Together, they show that neither the game nor the human spirit has limits. A Q&A with the team will follow. The screening is free and open to the public, and parking will be available in the PS2 parking garage.
Official sponsors for the event are Pinnacle Financial Partners and The Mary E. Hensley Lecture Series, which honors Mary E. Vass Hensley, a dedicated educator and WKU alumna who earned her bachelor's degree in 1952 and her master's in 1958.
