KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – It was a busy Monday for the WKU Men's Golf Team as they played the first two rounds of the Irish Creek Collegiate. The busy day resulted in the Tops being in a great position among the field, sitting in third place heading into the final round.
Juniors Stephen Warren and Riley Grindsatff, along with graduate student Luke Fuler led the way for the Red and White and were instrumental in the Tops being within the top-three. All three Hilltoppers are currently in the top-10 heading into the final round.
Currently tied for fifth is Stephen Warren. Warren had a very hot start for the Red and White as he put in seven birdies in total between his first and second rounds. His hot start resulted in him scoring his new personal best 36-hole score with a 139. Warren currently trails the current leader by one stroke.
Luke Fuller and Riley Grindstaff are currently tied for 10th on the board. Fuller had a great showing for WKU, scoring an even-par 70 in both rounds, showing his consistency. Fuller put in nine total birdies, putting in back-to-back birdies on two different occasions today. Fuller is currently tied for first in birdies and is third in par 3s with a 3.00 average.
The highlight of the day came from Riley Grindstaff who put in an eagle on his 15th hole during his outstanding second round. Grindstaff's 68 ties for his career best single round score. He was also just one stroke shy of tying his career best 36-hole score with a 140.
Right outside of the top-20 is Nic Hofman who is currently tied for 21st on the board. Hofman also replicated his round one score in the second round, scoring a 1-over 71. Hofman had a very hot second round, putting in birdies from holes three to five. Hofman, who currently boasts a 142 36-hole round score will be looking to use his momentum to climb within the top-20 during tomorrow's final round.
Gage Doyle is continuing to cement himself in the rotation for WKU, tying for 36th heading into the final round. The freshman scored an even-par 70 during his first round before having a bit of a setback in his second round, going 5-over. Doyle will be looking to bounce back in his final round to help WKU gain ground at the top of the leaderboard.
Also finishing in the top-50 for the Tops is senior Connery Meyer. Currently tied for 45th, Meyer showed improvement from his first (74) to second round (72). Meyer's improvement in round two was capped off by back-to-back birdies. The senior will be looking to rebound in this final round.
The Tops as a team have been very successful statistically, putting in the second most birdies in the field with 36. WKU is also second in both par 3s and par 4s.
