HUNTSVILLE, Texas — WKU women's basketball (13-9, 4-3 CUSA) fell to Sam Houston (6-13, 1-6 CUSA) in overtime on the road on Thursday night.
Alexis Mead was the leading scorer for WKU with 15 points to go along with three rebounds and two assists. Acacia Hayes finished with 14 points and three assists. Destiny Salary added 12 points, five rebounds and two assists. Teresa Faustino was the fourth Lady Topper in double figures with 11 points along with five rebounds and three assists.
After shooting 2-of-13 from 3-point range in the first half, Sam Houston connected on 10-of-16 in the second half.
A three from Mead got the scoring started for WKU and the Lady Toppers rattled of an 8-0 run to start the game. Sam Houston made 1-of-2 free throws to stop the run, but WKU responded with four straight points. The two teams traded buckets and then the Bearkats went on a 6-0 run to cut the Lady Topper lead down to five. Jailynn Brill made a free throw to put WKU back on the scoreboard, but Sam Houston scored the next four points to cut it to two. Salary made the final basket of the first quarter, bringing the score to 17-13 heading into the second quarter.
Once again WKU opened the second quarter on a scoring run, this time 13-0 to balloon its lead out to 17 points. Sam Houston bounced back with a 6-0 run of their own, but the Lady Toppers responded with a 7-0 run to take their biggest lead of the game at 37-19. From there the Bearkats outscored WKU 8-1 through the rest of the quarter, bringing the score to 38-27 heading into the second half.
Sam Houston started the third quarter outscoring 8-4 to trim that lead down to seven points. WKU then went on an 8-2 run to go ahead by 13 with 3:38 left in the quarter. Five straight points from the Bearkats brought the lead back to single digits, but the Lady Toppers responded with four straight of their own to take a 54-42 lead. After a three from Sam Houston, WKU ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 59-45 lead into the final quarter.
The Lady Toppers opened the fourth quarter outscoring Sam Houston 7-3 to take an 18-point lead. After trading baskets, Sam Houston went on a 14-0 run to cut the lead down to two with 2:56 left to play. A three from Mead pushed WKU back ahead by five, but the Bearkats ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to force overtime.
Overtime started with both teams trading 3-pointers, two from each team for a tied score with 2:38 left. The teams then traded a single free throw, tying at the score at 79-79. Sam Houston made a three with 1:58 left. Mead made a jumper to cut the lead to one, but the Bearkats scored the final five points of the game for the win.
