HOUSTON – WKU Women's Tennis showed improvement in singles play during the second day of the Rice Invitational, winning five of eight singles matches Saturday at the George R. Brown Tennis Center.
Paola Cortez, Sayda Hernandez, Sofia Blanco, Sunskrithi Damera, and Rachel Hermanova each claimed singles victories Saturday after the Lady Toppers struggled in singles play Friday in the first day of the three-day event.
"Played much better in singles today, winning five out of eight," WKU Women's Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. "We play a singles match tomorrow morning, so we are excited to have an opportunity to compete and finish with some momentum going into the spring."
Cortez defeated Houston's Laura Slisane 6-3, 7-5, Hernandez defeated Houston's Blanca Cortijo Parreno 6-4, 1-6, 6-4, Blanco defeated Incarnate Word's Isid Hernandez Leon 6-0, 1-6, 6-3, Damera defeated Incarnate Word's Iné Lamprecht 6-3, 6-3, and Hermanova defeated UT Arlington's Sarina Reinertsen 6-2, 6-4.
Also in singles, Incarnate Word's Lyric Bonilla defeated Samantha Martinez 6-2, 6-3, UT Arlington's Ana Paula Jiminez defeated Anna-Marie Kopecka 6-0, 6-3, and Houston's Nina Skoric defeated Mariana Zegada 6-3, 6-2.
The Lady Toppers struggled in doubles Saturday after claiming victories in all four doubles matches they played in the first day in Houston. Cortez and Kopecka claimed the lone victory in eight doubles matches on the event's second day, defeating UT Arlington's Francisca Vergara and Jiminez 6-4.
WKU will wrap up play in the Rice Invitational on Sunday, Nov. 5.
