BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – WKU Women's Tennis capped off play in the Samford Round Robin on Sunday at the Samford Tennis Center.
On the third day of the three-day event, the Lady Toppers claimed victories in three of four doubles matches, and also picked up singles victories from Paola Cortez and Rachel Hermanova in the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively.
"I would say this was a big improvement on Day 3," WKU Women's Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. "Winning three of four doubles, getting two wins at 1 and 2 against South Alabama, and being competitive in every other match – it was good to see that much improvement from our first tournament."
In doubles matches against Samford on Sunday, Cortez and Anna-Marie Kopecka defeated Alexis Lopez and Noelle Mauro 6-0, Sofia Blanco and Samantha Martinez defeated Emily Surcey and Margaret Jaraczewski 6-2, and Sunskrithi Damera and Mariana Zegada defeated Samantha Maras and Annie Holt 6-1. Hermanova and Sayda Hernandez fell to Ally Hayduk and Olivia Jablonski 6-2.
In singles, Cortez won her match against South Alabama's Nikola Novotna 7-6, 6-0, and Hermanova won her match against South Alabama's Elysia Pool 6-3, 7-6. Hernandez fell to South Alabama's Tereza Dejnozkova 6-4, 7-5, Kopecka fell to South Alabama's Manal Ennaciri 7-6, 6-4, Damera fell to South Alabama's Otoha Aoki 6-0, 4-6, 10-1, Martinez fell to Samford's Lauren Waddles 2-6, 6-3, 10-7, and Zegada fell to Samford's Grace Keller 6-4, 6-3.
WKU is scheduled to wrap up its fall slate Nov. 3-5 at the Rice Invitational in Houston.
