BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – WKU Women's Tennis was back in action Friday at the Samford Round Robin at the Samford Tennis Center.
The Lady Toppers won three of the four doubles matches they played to start the day, and had victories from Rachel Hermanova and Sunskrithi Damera in singles play against host Samford later in the day.
"Started off today in doubles and played very well against some very tough competition," WKU Women's Tennis Head Coach Greg Davis said. "In the afternoon singles matches, we were less competitive than we would have liked. That said, Rachel and Sunny had two good wins and Sofia and Mariana were right there at the end."
In doubles, Sofia Blanco and Samantha Martinez defeated UAB's Annalisa Smith and Sydney Clarke 6-3, Hermanova and Sayda Hernandez defeated UAB's Adela Wasserbauerova and Klara Kajabova 7-6, and Damera and Mariana Zegada defeated Samford's Grace Keller and Annie Holt 6-4. Paola Cortez and Anna-Marie Kopecka fell to UAB's Vanessa Mellynchuk and Mackenzie White 7-5.
In singles competition against Samford, Damera topped Lauren Waddles 6-7, 6-4, 10-3 and Hermanova defeated Emily Surcey 6-4, 7-5. Cortez lost to Alexis Lopez 6-2, 6-2, Hernandez lost to Ally Hayduk 6-2, 6-1, Kopecka lost to Noelle Mauro 7-6, 6-0, Blanco lost to Margaret Jaraczewski 7-6, 2-6, 10-6, Martinez lost to Samantha Maras 6-3, 6-4, and Zegada lost to Meredith Taylor 0-6, 7-5, 11-9.
WKU will continue play at the Samford Round Robin on Saturday and Sunday. The Lady Toppers are scheduled to face South Alabama in doubles at 10 a.m. CT and UAB in singles at 1 p.m. CT on Saturday, before wrapping up the weekend Sunday with doubles matches against Samford at 10 a.m. CT and singles matches against South Alabama at 11 a.m. CT.
