WKU Tennis Looks Ahead to Sunday Doubleheader

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis continues the 2023 season this Sunday, January 29 with a doubleheader at home against Western Carolina and Western Illinois. Doubles play at the Warren County Tennis Complex is set to begin at 12 p.m. CT against Western Carolina and continue at 4 p.m. CT against Western Illinois.

The Lady Toppers are coming off a loss last Thursday at home against Austin Peay, 6-1. This brings them to 3-2 on the season, while the Governors improved to 1-1.

Sunday will mark the first ever meeting between WKU and Western Carolina. In 2021, the Catamounts finished the year an even 9-9. They improved the following season, going 12-10 losing to Samford in the first round of the SoCon Tournament, 4-0. They have started this season 1-0 after sweeping Lenoir Rhyne, 7-0, on Jan. 21.

All-time, WKU is 3-1 against Western Illinois, playing for the first time in 1983. The Lady Toppers have won the last three meetings between the sides, only surrendering one point total in those three matches. They last met in 2020, when WKU got the sweep, 7-0 in Indianapolis.

The Fighting Leathernecks finished with a 1-10 record in 2021. The following year, they improved to 3-12. Western Illinois is 2-0 on the young season, beating St. Ambrose, 7-0 last fall and winning its first game of the spring against IUPUI, 4-3, yesterday in Indianapolis.
