SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Hilltopper Golf made major improvements from the morning to the afternoon on Monday as the played two rounds of the JT Poston Invitational hosted by Western Carolina. The team moved up five spots on the leaderboard into 10th as it shot 2-over 286 after an opening 18-over 302.
Senior Luke Fuller led the way for the Hilltoppers as he shot a pair of 1-over 72's at the par-71, 7,007-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley. He is currently tied for 18th, just two shots behind the top 10.
The lowest score of the day for the Tops came from sophomore Riley Grindstaff who fired a 3-under 68 in the second round. His first-round, 6-over 77 also counted for WKU and he is tied for 23rd.
Two Hilltoppers are tied for 53rd on the leaderboard: fifth-year senior Landon Carner and sophomore Will Stewart. Carner shot 5-over 76 and 3-over 74 while Stewart carded a 7-over 78 and then a 1-over 72.
Redshirt sophomore Nic Hofman was able to count his first-round for the Hilltoppers today with a 6-over 77. He improved to shoot 4-over 75 in the afternoon.
Junior Aaron Pha is playing in the Invitational as an individual. He shot 6-over 77 then 7-over 78 on the day.
The Hilltoppers will tee off in tee times on Tuesday morning to finish the event in North Carolina.
