LOUISVILLE, Ky. – WKU Baseball dropped its matchup with No. 10 Louisville, 11-4, on Tuesday night at Jim Patterson Stadium.
The Hilltoppers jumped out to an early lead with four runs in the top of the third, but the Cardinals rallied back with runs in five of the next six innings, capped off by a six-run eruption in the bottom of the eighth to pull away.
"You take away that eighth inning and we're right there," said head coach
John Pawlowski. "We played a solid game all the way up until that inning. We had a big inning in the third with four runs – excited to see our offense come to life there – came up with some big base hits. I thought Luke [Stofel] did an outstanding job for us. We know he's certainly capable of doing that, and he did a great job tonight. But, unfortunately the game just got out of hand in that eighth inning. We'll have to get ourselves ready to go as we jump right back into conference play this weekend."
Luke Stofel earned the starting nod on the mound for WKU, allowing three runs over 5.0 innings while fanning a career-high five batters. The Hilltoppers utilized
Jake Kates,
Logan Bowen,
Hunter Crosby and
Aaron Shiflet from there, with the group combing to surrender eight runs (seven earned) while not allowing a walk and recording two strikeouts.
At the plate, the Hilltoppers tallied five hits and four walks.
Andrew Delaney led the way, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run, while
Tristin Garcia,
Aidan Gilroy and
Matthew Meyer each added one hit apiece.
