BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball dropped its midweek matchup with Evansville, 9-8, on Tuesday night at Nick Denes Field.
The Hilltoppers held the lead for a majority of the game until a late rally by the Aces – which included five runs in the top of the ninth – led to the Evansville victory.
"Last week and then today we've had some unfortunate things happen [late in games]," said head coach
John Pawlowski. "We've had the lead and we've built a lead, but we just haven't been able to close games out and that's what we have to do. Somebody's got to step up down there. Some guy's got to step up and finish it and unfortunately tonight was one of those cases where we didn't finish it."
Cooper Hellman earned the starting nod for the Hilltoppers, tossing 3.0 frames of scoreless ball while allowing just one hit and striking out two batters. WKU utilized
Cole Heath,
Luke Stofel and
Logan Bowen for the final 6.0 innings of action, with Stofel logging 4.2 frames of work.
Offensively, the Hilltoppers tallied eight hits and three walks, with two players producing multi-hit performances.
Tristin Garcia and
Matthew Meyer each collected two hits apiece in the contest, while
Andrew Delaney recorded his first career grand slam in the game.
