BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis continued its 2022 season Wednesday afternoon with a win against the Alabama A&M Bulldogs in Huntsville to finish off its road trip. The Lady Toppers improved to 12-6 on the season while Alabama A&M moved to 5-10.
WKU took an early 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point.
The No. 3 duo of Sofia Blanco and Samantha Martinez swept their match on Court 3 for the second straight day, while the No. 1 pair of Cora-Lynn von Dungern and Paola Cortez secured the first point by a score of 6-1. The match on Court 2 went unfinished with Laura Bernardos and Mariana Zegada up, 5-2.
In singles play, The Lady Toppers won five of six matches to win the match.
Sofia Blanco was the first to finish at No. 6, only dropping one game in two sets, winning 6-0, 6-1. At the No. 4 spot, Rachel Hermanova took the victory for the second straight day, 6-2, 6-3. She improves to a team-best 14-2 on the year. Laura Bernardos claimed the win on Court 2 due to her opponent retiring due to injury. She was ahead 6-2, 5-0 at the time. This clinched the win for the Lady Toppers, ahead 4-0.
The final three matches were played out.
Paula Cortez won her 10th singles match of the year, also winning in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. She becomes the third player this season to get double-digit wins. At No. 5, Samantha Martinez took the decision, winning 6-2, 6-3. This put WKU up 6-0 on the scoreboard. The Court one match went to a super tiebreaker for the third set, that went in favor of the Bulldogs, winning 7-6 (4), 2-6, 13-11. This made the final score 6-1.
"It was a good win today. I thought we played some of the best doubles of the year today." head coach Greg Davis said. "In singles, we won five first sets which is very important when playing on the road."
WKU will play a home match on Saturday afternoon, March 19 for a matchup against Eastern Illinois in Bowling Green. The match will begin at 1 p.m. and will be played at the WKU Tennis Complex.
