BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU women's basketball led from start to finish against Little Rock on Sunday afternoon at Diddle Arena, earning a 48-25 victory. It was the lowest points total allowed by a WKU team since holding Centre College to 24 on Feb. 6, 1976 and it was the fewest the Lady Toppers has held a Division I team to in the modern era (since 1973-74).
"We're happy to get a win, whether it's a pretty win or an ugly win, a win's a win right now," said head coach Greg Collins. "It's always hard to play against Coach (Joe) Foley and Little Rock. They're always aggressive and physical defensively. It's hard for any team to score on them. They're coming off beating Texas A&M at home, they've played four SEC teams."
For the fifth time in seven games, WKU outrebounded its opponent. The Lady Toppers crashed the board for 44 rebounds while Little Rock collected 30. In that last two games, WKU has outrebounded its opponent by 15 (at Ball State) and by 14 (vs. Little Rock).
The Lady Toppers had ten players in the scoring column. Teresa Faustino was the leading scorer with 11 points. It was her third double digit game of the season and the second time this season she has led the team in scoring. Acacia Hayes had eight points. Jaylin Foster and Josie Gilvin each had six points and six rebounds.
The WKU bench scored 23 points in the game. Through seven games, bench players are averaging 32.0 points per game for the Lady Toppers.
WKU has been plagued by slow starts this season, but the Lady Toppers scored the first four points of the game and took a 11-6 lead after the first quarter. WKU scored the first 12 points of the second quarter to push that lead out to 17. The Trojans used a 6-0 lead to end the period to make it 23-12 at halftime.
The third quarter started back-and-forth, but WKU went on a 13-2 run to end the period ahead by 18. The Lady Toppers held Little Rock to just five points in the fourth quarter.
WKU improves to 25-8 all-time against Little Rock, including a 12-2 record against the Trojans in Bowling Green.
The Lady Toppers hit the road for a three-game road swing that starts on Thursday, Dec. 15 at Indiana State at 10 a.m. WKU will then travel to Cal Baptist on Dec. 21 before opening Conference USA play at Rice on Dec. 29.
