BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU Baseball "Wings & Celery" Fall World Series concluded tonight at Nick Denes Field.
Â
The final game of the three-game series decided the winner after the first two games were split between the two teams.
Â
The Nan-imal's, led by assistant coach Daylan Nanny took the win in the final game, 18-8 over Herbie's Heroes, led by director of operations, Tyler Herbst.
Â
"I thought we put three games together," said Nanny. "Obviously, coming off a game two loss, it was good to see the boys come out early and within striking distance the whole time. Obviously, we gave up some runs early, but we were able to battle back and put-up zeros when we needed to."
Â
The Nan-imal's took the first game, 11-6 on Thursday night. They took an early 3-0 lead in the third inning and never gave it up after a double from Aidan Gilroy and a single from Andrew Delaney that scored him.
Â
After dropping game one, Herbie's Heroes looked to even the series on Friday and force a decisive game three and they did just that.
Â
The Heroes fell behind early, 3-2 after three innings, but took the lead 4-3 in the top of the fifth after a two-RBI single from Ty Batusich.
Â
The Heroes pitching staff didn't let up a single run after the first inning and helped lead the squad to a 7-3 win in game two.
Â
Game three went back-and-forth early. Delaney went deep in the first frame and gave the Nan-imal's the lead. The Heroes responded quickly with four runs in the bottom of the first after a couple singles and walks. The top of the second had more baserunners for the Nan-imal's, none of them reaching by way of a hit. They were able to match the score, tying the game 4-4 in the second.
Â
Cole Eigenhuis entered the game in the second inning and pitched a few scoreless innings, while his offense got hot. After taking the lead 6-4 in the third, The Nani-mal's got the bases loaded in the fourth and Delaney did the rest, taking a ball over the fence in left field to break the game open, 11-4.
Â
The Nan-imal's never looked back, adding seven more runs while only surrendering four making the final tally, 18-8.
Â
"I thought the first two games were very competitive," said head coach Marc Rardin. "I thought they (The Nan-imal's) were more engaged. I had some rules involved, being the commissioner of the "Wings & Celery". Certain pitchers had to get so many pitches, batters faced, or innings pitched. That revealed us with some pitching depth, and they struggled today and struggled with tempo early on. Guys have to learn how to fight in a nine-inning game, there is not going to be a run rule. This team over here had the opportunities to get right back in it throughout and just never did. Kudos to The Nan-imal's, turning some double plays and getting out of those innings, but I thought today could have been better. I think overall, for WKU Baseball, that is something that this year we have to be aware of because our team is going to be in those situations and that is something I wanted to see."
Â
WKU Baseball has now concluded fall action and will suit up for the spring next year in February 2023.
