BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis continues its 2022 spring season on Sunday, January 30, as the team hosts the Lipscomb Bisons and UT Martin Skyhawks for a doubleheader. Doubles play at the Michael O. Buchanon Park tennis facility will begin at 1 p.m. against Lipscomb and 6 p.m. against UT Martin.
WKU is 13-13 all-time against Lipscomb, with the first matchup taking place in 2001. The sides have gone back-and-forth over the past 21 years, both winning half of the 26 matches. Last season, the Lady Toppers visited Lipscomb in Nashville where the Bisons took the dual match, 4-2.
Lipscomb had a dual match record of 3-8 in 2020 before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, they held a record of 10-9, losing in the second round of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament to North Florida, 4-0.
The Bisons faced Tarleton State on Friday and lost by a score of 5-2 in their first dual match of the regular season.
The Hilltoppers are 5-2 all-time against UT Martin, with the first matchup taking place in 1981. Prior to their matchup last season, the sides had not met since 1991. Last March, WKU swept the Skyhawks, 7-0, marking their first home match win in over four years.
UT Martin had a dual match record of 1-9 in 2020 before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, they held a record of 2-15, with both wins coming in Ohio Valley Conference play.
The Skyhawks hosted back-to-back dual matches against Missouri in September, dropping both matches 7-0 and 5-0. Following that, UT Martin competed in a few tournaments throughout the Southern Region, including the Austin Peay Fall Tournament, the North Alabama Fall Tournament, and the ITA Ohio Valley Regionals.
WKU has started its season 1-0 in dual matches with a win at Bellarmine on January 17. The Lady Toppers were scheduled for a rematch against the Knights last weekend on January 24 in Bowling Green, but it was canceled.
