Head Coach Greg Davis Interview
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — WKU Tennis start its 2022 spring season on Monday, January 17, as the Lady Toppers travel to Bellarmine for their first dual match of the year. Doubles play at the Eddie Weber Tennis Complex will begin at 12 noon CT.
"Bellarmine is a very improved team and we're going to have our hands full right out of the gate," head coach Greg Davis said. "The great part about our team is we have a lot of options. It's going to be lineup by committee and our depth is definitely going to be a strong point this year."
WKU is 7-0 all-time against Bellarmine, with the first matchup a 7-0 victory in 2006 and the most recent being a 7-0 win in 2021. The Knights had an undefeated 9-0 dual match record in 2020 before the remainder of the season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2021, they made the jump to NCAA Division I and the Atlantic Sun Conference and proceeded to go 0-17. Bellarmine previously competed in Division II and the Great Lakes Athletic Conference.
The Knights were supposed to begin their 2022 season on Sunday, January 16 at Kentucky, but it was postponed due to predicted inclement weather.
In three fall events – the Samford Round Robin, Butler Invitational and UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational – WKU went 26-22 overall in singles play and posted a 10-12 record in doubles. The Lady Toppers returned to organized team practices after New Year's in preparation for the spring season.
WKU finished the 2021 spring campaign with a 7-14 overall record. The Lady Toppers capped the season with five victories in the team's final nine matches, which included a three-match win streak during that stretch. The team returns four letterwinners – Laura Bernardos, Alexis Cramer, Samantha Martinez and Cora-Lynn von Dungern – to go along with newcomers Sofia Blanco, Paola Cortez, Rachel Hermanova, Taylor Shaw and Mariana Zegada.
