CINCINNATI, Ohio — WKU Tennis enjoyed a busy weekend in its first action of the fall, competing in the UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational on Friday, September 17 and Saturday, September 18 at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center on the Bearcats' campus. The Lady Toppers competed against players from host Cincinnati, Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green.
WKU combined for an 11-7 singles record and a 4-5 doubles record; playing each opponent in three doubles matches and six singles matches. With a 2-1 record, Cora-Lynn von Dungern (playing at No. 1) shared the singles title with Cincinnati's Ioana Guna and Bowling Green's Ioanna Tsodari.
"I thought we had a good tournament especially in singles both days," head coach Greg Davis said. "We need to tighten our doubles lineup so we will be working on that a great deal before the next tournament at Butler."
Along with von Dungern, Laura Bernardos (No. 2), Paola Cortez (No. 3), Samantha Martinez (No. 5) and Alexis Cramer (No. 6) all posted 2-1 marks. Overall in doubles, the duo of Bernardos and Martinez led the Lady Toppers with a 2-1 record. Taylor Shaw (No. 5) finished with a 1-2 mark.
The Lady Toppers' highlights on Day 1 were defeating Bowling Green 2-to-1 in doubles and sweeping Miami (Ohio) 6-to-0 in singles.
"We had a total team effort against Miami of Ohio in singles, sweeping them in all 1-through-6 positions," Davis said.
On Day 2, WKU defeated Miami (Ohio) 2-to-1 in doubles and beat Bowling Green 4-to-2 in singles.
The Lady Toppers will be back in action from October 1-3 at the Butler Invitational in Indianapolis, then wrap up their fall schedule at the Samford Invitational in Birmingham from October 8-10.
