Head Coach Davis Interview
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. — WKU Tennis continues its fall season this weekend, as the Lady Toppers travel up I-65 for the Butler Invitational. The two-day event will take place on Saturday, October 2 and Sunday, October 3.
WKU will compete against players from the host Bulldogs, Dayton and IUPUI.
"We're looking forward to a good tournament," head coach Greg Davis said. "All those are competitive teams, so we'll have our hands full going into Indianapolis this weekend."
The Lady Toppers are 3-0 all-time against Butler, which includes victories of 6-1 in 2021, 4-3 in 2020 and 7-0 in 2017. WKU is also undefeated against Dayton, sporting a 2-0 all-time mark with wins of 6-1 in 2021 and 502 in 2019. The team is 2-4 all-time against IUPUI, most recently with a 5-2 victory over the Jaguars in 2020.
In WKU's first action of the fall at the UC/Pam Whitehead Invitational, the Lady Toppers combined for an 11-7 singles record and 4-5 doubles mark against opponents from host Cincinnati, Miami (Ohio) and Bowling Green.
"We had a great tournament and I thought all the way 1-through-6 we played well," Davis said. "Right now we're just focusing on trying to play better doubles, and a lot of that is getting used to playing with different partners than we had last year. We're showing consistent improvement at practice this week, so that's good to see."
In Cincinnati, Cora-Lynn von Dungern (No. 1), Laura Bernardos (No. 2), Paola Cortez (No. 3), Samantha Martinez (No. 5) and Alexis Cramer (No. 6) all posted 2-1 marks. Overall in doubles, the duo of Bernardos and Martinez led the Lady Toppers with a 2-1 record. Taylor Shaw (No. 5) finished with a 1-2 mark.
