DAYTON, Ohio — WKU Tennis extended its win streak to three with a 6-1 victory over Dayton on Saturday afternoon. After winning the doubles point for the 13th time in 19 matches this season, the Lady Toppers took five of the six singles that followed.
WKU improved to 7-12 overall this spring, as the team won its fifth match in the last seven tries.
"We played very well in spurts today but I still feel our best tennis is ahead," head coach Greg Davis said. "Winning three in a row and five of the last seven shows we've improved as a team as we go into our last match tomorrow against Cincinnati."
The No. 1 doubles team of Lisa Friess and Cora-Lynn von Dungern began the day with a 6-0 victory, improving to 11-6 on the season. The No. 2 duo of Laura Bernardos and Samantha Martinez then followed with a 6-3 result to give WKU a 1-0 lead in the match. Bernardos and Martinez pushed their record together to a team-best 11-4 on the campaign.
von Dungern began singles competition with a 6-3, 6-0 final at the No. 1 spot; it was her third straight win as she boosted her season record to 10-9. Tristen Bryant-Otake followed with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 – also her third consecutive win – to give the Lady Toppers a 3-0 lead over the Flyers.
Dayton did get on the board with a singles win at No. 3, but that was the only point the hosts would earn on the day.
Martinez at No. 4 and Friess at No. 6 both won in straight sets, then Bernardos pulled out a 6-2, 2-6, 6-3 triumph to round out play at the Graul Tennis Complex. It was both Friess' and Bernardos' third straight victories as well, and Bernardos improved her overall record to a team-best 12-7 this season.
The 6-1 final score pushed WKU's all-time advantage over the Flyers to 2-0, and dropped Dayton to 5-13 this spring.
The Lady Toppers will conclude their regular season on Sunday, April 18 against Cincinnati at the Trabert-Talbert Tennis Center. Play will begin at 1 p.m.
