BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Devyn Terbrak threw WKU Baseball's third straight complete game as the Hilltoppers clinched a series victory over Marshall with a 5-2 win on Saturday afternoon at Nick Denes Field.
Following Jake Kates' and Sean Bergeron's complete-game performances in Friday's seven-inning doubleheader, the Hilltoppers' starting pitchers have gone the distance in all three games against The Herd so far this series.
The streak marks the first time since at least 2005 that the WKU pitching staff has seen three consecutive complete game efforts from its starters.
Over 23.0 innings of action, the trio has combined to allow just two earned runs and two walks while striking out 19 batters.
"The job that Devyn [Terbrak] did was outstanding," said head coach John Pawlowski. "He only had one walk and filled up the strike zone. We came up with some big, timely hits as well. But I thought one of the biggest differences today was our defense. When you look at the way our defense played – Justin [Carlin] made a great play and threw the tying run out at home plate [in the fifth inning] – and all of our infielders made some unbelievable plays. I just thought it was some solid defensive work by our team today. I was really proud of that as well."
Terbrak earned the start in his sixth appearance of the year, recording his first win of the season after allowing just two runs (one earned) and one walk while recording seven strikeouts in a career-high 9.0 innings pitched.
At the plate, the Hilltoppers racked up 13 hits, with four players producing multi-hit efforts. Justin Carlin led the way with a career-high four hits, while Richard Constantine, Jackson Gray and Ray Zuberer III each added two hits apiece.
SCORING SUMMARY
The Hilltoppers took an early lead with two runs in the first frame, as Carlin recorded an RBI-single before scoring later in the inning following an error by Marshall's pitcher.
The Herd scored their first run of the game in the fifth frame, using an RBI-double down the left field line to make it 2-1.
WKU answered back in the bottom of the inning, with Constantine recording an RBI-single and Gray scoring from third on a wild pitch to put the game at 4-1.
The Hilltoppers tacked on another run in the sixth, with Carlin sending an RBI-single through the left side to plate Hunter Evans.
Marshall would go on to add one more run in the top of the ninth before ultimately suffering the 5-2 defeat.
