BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis will play three matches in the next four days, starting with Butler on the road on Friday, March 26 at 1 p.m. Then, the Lady Toppers will return to the WKU Tennis Complex for home matches against UAB on Saturday, March 27 at 12 noon and UT Martin on Monday, March 29 at 1:30 p.m.
The Lady Toppers hold a 2-10 overall record on the season. Most recently, the team dropped a 5-2 decision at home against Conference USA opponent FIU – it was WKU's first home match since April 6, 2019.
Laura Bernardos continued her stellar play with a 6-4, 6-1 victory at the No. 2 singles spot. The Segovia, Spain, native posted her fifth straight singles victory, improving to 7-5 overall on the season and a perfect 3-0 against C-USA foes. All of her singles matches have been at the No. 2 position.
WKU's also won the opening doubles point, but dropped the five other singles matches for the 5-2 final. Head coach Greg Davis commented about getting off to a better start in that segment of the competition.
"We seem to struggle as a team in the first set and getting off to a good start in singles," he said at the time. "Today we lost 5-of-6 first sets, so that's one area I think we can – and will – improve on in the coming weeks."
Butler owns a 3-3 record so far this season. After opening the campaign with losses to Middle Tennessee, Miami (Ohio) and the University of Indianapolis, the Bulldogs have responded with wins over SIU Edwardsville, Marian College and Dayton. However, the victory over the Flyers on March 13 has been the team's only competition since February 21. WKU is 2-0 all-time against Butler, with a 7-0 win in 2017 and a 4-3 victory in 2020.
UAB visits Bowling Green with a 9-6 overall record, including a 1-1 record in C-USA play. Most recently, the Blazers lost by a score of 4-2 at Southern Miss on March 19, then came back the following day to defeat LA Tech by a score of 4-2 in a neutral-site match in Hattiesburg, Miss. The Lady Toppers are 1-5 all-time against UAB, with the lone win coming by a score of 4-1 in 2018.
UT Martin will come to town with an 0-9 mark on the campaign. WKU has a 4-2 all-time record against the Skyhawks, but this will be the first meeting since 1991. Monday's match will be the last scheduled home event for the Lady Toppers in the 2021 season.
