BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis is set for a pair of matches this weekend, including the team's first home competition since April 6, 2019. The Lady Toppers will face Austin Peay on the road on Friday, March 19 and then return home to play FIU on Saturday, March 20.
WKU is coming off a slim loss at Murray State, in which the Lady Toppers took a 3-2 lead in the team match but dropped the final two singles decisions to fall by a score of 4-3. It dropped the team to 2-8 on the season.
"Tough, tough match," head coach Greg Davis said at the time. "We competed hard and had some great performances. I like the way the team has shown improvement [recently], and I think our best tennis is ahead of us."
Austin Peay boasts a 4-1 overall record this season, most recently with back-to-back wins over Illinois State and North Alabama on March 5 and 6, respectively. Senior Fabienne Schmidt leads the Governors with a 4-1 mark at the No. 1 singles spot and a perfect 5-0 record with partner Danielle Morris at the top doubles position.
WKU is 29-10 all-time against Austin Peay in a series that dates back to 1981. However, the Governors have defeated the Lady Toppers in consecutive years.
FIU will be the first Conference USA opponent to come to Bowling Green since UAB on February 16, 2019. WKU has not recorded a win at home since a 6-1 decision against Evansville on March 24, 2017, although there were only five other opportunities in-between.
The Lady Toppers are 0-3 all-time against the Panthers, with one match in Miami, one in Denton, Texas and one in Nashville. This season, FIU has a perfect 5-0 record, but has not left the state of Florida for competition.
