DADE CITY, Fla. – WKU Women's Golf finished third as a team at the Spring Break Shootout on Tuesday as graduate senior Mary Joiner recorded the program's best finish by an individual this season at t-2nd.
"We put together some really good golf yesterday," said head coach Adam Gary on the team. "We didn't get off to the best start today, and it was bit a windier than previous days. I'm glad we were able to get things under control at the end of the round. We'll learn from it and apply these lessons to our next tournament in a few weeks."
WKU shot 16-over 300 in Tuesday's final round, to finish at 18-over 870 for the 54-hole tournament. Of the 15-team field, 12 teams shot higher in the third round than the second, with every team shooting at least 3-over par in the final round.
After starting her round with a double-bogey, Joiner fought back throughout the 18 holes, finishing on a birdie and three pars to shoot 3-over 74. Her 54-hole total of 5-under 208 ties the program record for individual 54-hole score, in terms of strokes. Her t-2nd finish ties for the best of any Lady Topper from the 2020-21 season.
"I was happy to see Mary play really well yesterday," added Gary. "She, like the rest of the team, had a rough start this morning, but bounced back and had a strong finish."
Freshman Rachel Rich also posted a 3-over 74 in the final round to tie for 18th on the leaderboard. The South Carolina native recorded 14 pars on Tuesday to finish at 7-over 220 at the par-71, 6,056-yard Lake Jovita Golf & Country Club.
Teammate and senior captain Megan Clarke tied with Rich for 18th after carding a final-round, 4-over 75. Each of her three rounds counted for WKU's team scores. This is Clarke's seventh top-20 finish out of the eight tournaments she has played in for the Lady Toppers this year.
Both sophomore Sarah Arnold and redshirt senior Teri Doss turned in 6-over 77's to round out the WKU lineup. Arnold finished at 13-over 226 while Doss's 54-hole total was 14-over 227. They finished t-39th and t-41st respectively.
Senior Olivia Reed competed as an individual and posted a 4-over 75 on the final day of play. She tied for 21st, her second top-25 finish of the season.
WKU will take a quick, well-earned break before getting back out on the course at the UTC Invitational on March 29-30.
