BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – WKU Baseball's four-game win streak came to an end following a 7-3 loss to Bellarmine on Tuesday night at Nick Denes Field.
In what was a closely contested matchup through eight innings, a three-run frame by the Knights' offense in the top of the ninth ended up giving them the cushion they needed to come away with the win.
"Tough one today," said head coach
John Pawlowski. "We didn't play the way we're certainly capable of playing in a number of different areas. But we'll take it, learn from it, and move on."
Devyn Terbrak earned the starting nod in his third appearance of the season, tossing 5.2 frames while only allowing two earned runs and striking out a season-high seven batters.
Ryan O'Connell,
Wil Moritz,
Aaron Shiflet and
Collin Lollar all made relief appearances in the game, with the quartet surrendering four earned runs while recording five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of action.
Offensively, the Hilltoppers tallied nine hits on the day, with three players producing multi-hit efforts.
Jackson Gray led the way with a 3-for-4 performance, while
Jack Wilson and
Ray Zuberer III both added two hits apiece, with Zuberer recording his team-leading third home run of the season in the contest.
SCORING SUMMARY
WKU got on the board first, with Gray sending an RBI-single through the right side to plate
Andrew Delaney in the first frame.
The Knights evened the game in the top of the third, using an RBI-single to right center to make it 1-1.
Zuberer then put the Hilltoppers back in front after sending a solo shot over the right field wall in the bottom of the inning.
WKU extended its lead in the fourth frame, as an RBI-single up the middle by
Kevin Lambert put the score at 3-1.
Bellarmine tacked on one run in the fifth off a wild pitch before evening the game in the sixth inning following an RBI-single through the left side.
The Knights then took their first lead of the game in the top of the seventh with a solo shot over the left field wall.
Bellarmine would go on to add three security runs in the ninth, leading to the eventual 7-3 victory.
