BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis looks to continue its recent momentum into a Sunday, March 14th match at Murray State. The Lady Toppers and Racers will begin play at 1 p.m.
Most recently, WKU played a pair of Conference USA matches on March 5 and 6, getting edged by LA Tech by a score of 4-3 and then turning around the next day to defeat Southern Miss, 5-2. The win over the Golden Eagles was the first regular-season C-USA win for the Lady Toppers since a 4-1 result at UAB on March 10, 2018, although there were only eight other league matchups in-between.
In those two competitions, WKU went 7-5 overall in singles play, including a pair of victories by both Cora-Lynn von Dungern at the No. 1 spot and Laura Bernardos at the No. 2 position. Tristen Bryant-Otake, Lisa Friess and Lauren Joch also claimed one singles match apiece.
For her stellar singles play – and two doubles wins with partner Samantha Martinez – Bernardos was named C-USA Athlete of the Week, the first Lady Topper to earn the honor since von Dungern on January 22, 2020.
While WKU enters Sunday's match with a 2-7 overall team record on the season, Murray State is in similar standing, owning a 2-6 mark thus far. The Racers have defeated North Alabama and Southern Indiana, while most recently losing to LA Tech on March 8 by a score of 5-2. Prior to facing WKU, Murray State faces Lipscomb tonight at 5 p.m.
The Lady Toppers are only 4-16 all-time against the Racers, but have won the two most recent meetings; a 4-3 victory on February 16, 2020, and a 6-1 decision on February 20, 2016.
