BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Hilltopper Basketball opens its 103rd season with its first of two exhibitions against Campbellsville at 7 p.m. CT Monday at E.A. Diddle Arena.
After not having exhibitions last season because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Hilltoppers will host two tune-up games this week on their home court.
The Hilltoppers are coming off a 21-8 season in which they won the Conference USA East Division title with the best winning percentage in the league, as well as advanced to the NIT quarterfinals.
Campbellsville went 9-16 last season and has started this season 1-1. While this game will not count, WKU is 6-0 against Campbellsville in regular-season games, while head coach Rick Stansbury is 1-0 against the Tigers.
TOP STORYLINES
• WKU is 62-4 all-time in preseason exhibition games, and the Hilltoppers have won 30 straight preseason tune-ups dating back to a 2002-03 loss to the Harlem Globetrotters.
• Campbellsville is the alma mater of WKU head coach Rick Stansbury, where he was a four-year letterman and got his coaching start as a student assistant. Stansbury received Campbellsville's Distinguished Alumnus Award in 1999 and was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame in 2003.
• WKU's two exhibition opponents, Campbellsville and Cumberlands, represent the start of Stansbury's coaching career. He was a student assistant at Campbellsville and a graduate assistant at Cumberlands.
• WKU associate head coach Phil Cunningham is a Campbellsville native who played for and coached with the Tigers under his father and longtime CU coach Lou Cunningham.
• WKU returns just 30% of its scoring, 26% of its rebounding, 44% of its assists and 19% of its blocks from 2020-21. The returning leading scorer is fifth-year senior Josh Anderson, who averaged 9.3 points.
• Josh Anderson was named a C-USA Preseason All-Conference honoree for the first time in his career. Anderson could become the first player in Hilltopper history to earn five letters with the program.
• The HIlltoppers were picked third in the preseason Conference USA poll, behind West Division foes UAB and Louisiana Tech. This is the first time since 2017-18 that WKU hasn't been picked to win the league.
• WKU's 88 wins over the last four years are the most in Conference USA. The Hilltoppers are one of 14 programs in the nation to have won at least 20 games in each of the last four seasons, and one of 18 schools in the nation to appear in their league's last three championship games.
LAST GAME AGAINST CAMPBELLSVILLE: NOVEMBER 18, 2019
Seven Hilltoppers scored in double figures, and WKU used a dominant team effort to roll past Campbellsville 109-66 in a regular season game at E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Hilltoppers shot 61.5 percent from the field, made 12 of 26 3-pointers and netted 17 of 20 free throws. That led to 21 assists on 40 made baskets with just 11 turnovers.
Redshirt junior forward Carson Williams scored a career-high 27 points on 11-of-13 shooting to lead the way, while sophomore center Charles Bassey added 15 points and eight rebounds.
