BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU Tennis travels north to face in-state rival Kentucky, with a match between the Lady Toppers and Wildcats to take place on Saturday, Jan. 30 at 1 p.m. CT. This will be WKU's lone competition of the weekend, as a Friday, Jan. 29 match at Cincinnati was canceled.
The Lady Toppers are 0-1 all-time against Kentucky, with the Wildcats taking a 6-0 win in 2019. The teams were scheduled to face off in 2020, but the season was halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kentucky is 6-0 on the season, including victories against Conference USA teams Middle Tennessee (7-0) and Marshall (5-2). All six of the Wildcats' wins have been on their home courts at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.
Last weekend, WKU (1-2) fell to Lipscomb by a score of 4-2. It was the Lady Bisons' third consecutive win over the Lady Toppers in the past three years, although the result was an improvement over the previous two matches, which were 4-0 defeats.
To begin play, the No. 1 doubles pair of Lisa Friess and Cora-Lynn von Dungern clinched a 6-1 victory. After Lipscomb responded with a 6-3 result at No. 3, it was the No. 2 doubles duo of Laura Bernarods and Samantha Martinez that clinched the opening point for the Lady Toppers with a 6-3 win. Bernardos was the lone singles winner for the Lady Toppers, as she won at the No. 2 position by a score of 6-4, 6-2. The Segovia, Spain, native improved to 2-1 in singles matches so far this season, all of which being at the second spot.
