NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Despite winning the doubles point to begin the evening, WKU Tennis dropped a 4-2 decision at Lipscomb on Saturday night.
It was the Lady Bisons' third consecutive win over WKU in the past three years, although this result was an improvement over the previous two matches, which were 4-0 defeats. The Lady Toppers fell to a 13-13 deadlock in the all-time series against Lipscomb.
"This was a tough match against a very good Lipscomb team," head coach Greg Davis said. "We played well in doubles to take the doubles point but struggled in certain areas during the singles matches."
To begin play, the No. 1 doubles pair of Lisa Friess and Cora-Lynn von Dungern clinched a 6-1 victory. After Lipscomb responded with a 6-3 result at No. 3, it was the No. 2 doubles duo of Laura Bernardos and Samantha Martinez that clinched the opening point for the Lady Toppers with a 6-3 win.
Bernardos was the lone singles winner for the Lady Toppers (1-2), as she won at the No. 2 position by a score of 6-4, 6-2. The Segovia, Spain, native improved to 2-1 in singles matches so far this season, all of which being at the second spot.
Her victory tied the team match at 2-2 after the Lady Bisons claimed the first two singles matchups. But Lipscomb (2-0) would take the next two decisions as well, giving the home team a clinch. Friess' match at the No. 5 position went unfinished, but the Graz, Austria, native was winning by a score of 6-2, 5-5.
WKU's next action will be at Cincinnati (Jan. 29) and Kentucky (Jan. 30) this coming Friday and Saturday.
