LOUISVILLE, Ky. — WKU Tennis earned its first victory of a young season, defeating Bellarmine by a score of 7-0 on Monday afternoon. The Lady Toppers improved to 1-1 in 2021 and 7-0 all-time against the Knights.
WKU began the match by sweeping doubles competition, as the No. 1 duo of Lisa Friess and Cora-Lynn von Dungern (6-3), No. 2 pair of Laura Bernardos and Tristen Bryant-Otake (6-3) and No. 3 team of Alexis Cramer and Lauren Joch (7-5) defeated their Bellarmine opponents to give the Lady Toppers a 1-0 lead.
Alexis Cramer secured a win by default the the No. 6 singles spot, then the remaining five WKU players won their matches in straight sets to give the team a 7-0 win. Freshman Samantha Martinez beat her opponent Morgan Whitlock at the No. 4 singles spot by a score of 6-0, 6-2; it was the Venezuelan's first collegiate victory.
"I thought the team played well, which we needed to do in order to go into Lipscomb with some confidence," head coach Greg Davis said.
WKU's next team match will be on Saturday, Jan. 23 against those Lady Bisons, with play beginning at 7 p.m. CT. Lipscomb did not compete this past weekend; the team's first competition of 2021 will be on Friday, Jan. 22 vs. UT Martin.
