My Story: Volleyball's Lauren Matthews

These past few months of 2020 have been some for the history books. There have been a variety of different events such as Australia being on fire for weeks on end, to Kobe Bryant's passing, to a global pandemic outbreak, all the way to racial injustice finally being brought to light.

We left school to go on Spring Break not knowing that we would not return until four months later. We went from training in the gym preparing for our 2020 season, to being quarantined in our hometowns for months dying to get in the gym and touch a ball. Throughout quarantine, our team and staff members stayed connected by having weekly Zoom meetings where we would just catch up with life. We even went as far as having a zoom workout, which was quite the show.

The entire WKU Volleyball staff has maintained such a positive and optimistic outlook and I am forever grateful to have them by my side during times like these. We have a lot to prove this season coming off of the accomplishments we made in the 2019 season but we are ready for anything.

Being back on campus for me is a sigh of relief because I can finally get back into a routine and I am constantly around my favorite people. Although things are very different then how they were before we left, so is society. I've been put in a position to educate and reveal what it is like to be not only a black person in America, but a black woman. I am constantly learning and mirroring new information and posting them on different social media platforms so that others can see and learn themselves. With that being said, I challenge all of Hilltopper Nation to continue the fight against social injustice, and educate yourself and your peers on this harsh reality. #BlackLivesMatter
