Coming off the high of our 2019 season, me and the girls were chasing after the team we were going to be in the 2020 season. With spring cut short, a lot of us had to get creative without the luxuries we were so fortunate to have. I'm talking laundry detergent in place of weights and elaborate makeshift volleyball nets.Â
My time as a collegiate athlete is slipping away, like the sand falling in an hourglass. I tend to feel melancholy and nostalgia at the end of this journey, however the work ethic of my teammates over the past few months has overshadowed those thoughts. Seeing them win in both the mental battle of staying positive and the physical battle of remaining disciplined moved me.Â
Life is full of adversity that requires resiliency. If there's one thing that I have learned from the WKU Athletics community, adversity never seems to ruffle any feathers around here. Instead, we react and take action. This community shows up for one another. This is validated through the nonstop outreach of Joey Case and TOPCARE offering virtual mental health aid during stay-at-home orders. This is validated through the financial sacrifices that the athletics staff are taking on to ensure us student-athletes can compete. This is validated through the multiple phone calls I received from my coaches to tell me that they love me, and that as a black woman, my life matters.Â
I would not want to be going through these different times with any other community of people. We are all stronger than we believe, and it is hard to imagine what we could not be able overcome as we continue to come together for one another.
THANK YOU!
