BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women's basketball team will play its 11th road game of the season on Saturday, this time taking on Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m. (CST).
WKU is 11-6 on the season and 3-3 in Conference USA. Marshall is 7-10 and 2-4 in C-USA. The Lady Toppers currently have the top RPI ranking in the league at No. 31. Overall, C-USA has five teams in the top 100 with Old Dominion (No. 37), Middle Tennessee (No. 59), Charlotte (No. 71) and Rice (No. 99). WKU is tied for sixth overall in the conference standings, four games back from first (Rice: 7-0).
Last week, the Lady Toppers split a pair of road games, falling to Old Dominion and bouncing back at Charlotte. At Charlotte, WKU led for most of the game. The 49ers made it interesting, cutting it to three in the last minute of the game but Sherry Porter split a pair of free throws to seal the win for WKU.
Raneem Elgedawy and Meral Abdelgawad led the Lady Toppers with 14 points each in the game. It was the most points Abdelgawad has scored putting up 15 against Mercer in the second game of the season.
Saturday will be the 14th meeting all-time between WKU and Marshall. The Lady Toppers are 12-1 against the Thundering Herd. WKU has won six-straight against Marshall and is 5-0 in Huntington.
The last time the two teams met was in Huntington and it took overtime to determine a winner. Ultimately, WKU came away with a 69-66 win behind four double-digit scorers including a double-double from Dee Givens who had 23 points and 13 rebounds.
The Thundering Herd is led in scoring my Savannah Wheeler who is averaging 12.8 points per game. Kristen Mayo is putting up 10.5 points per game as the other Marshall player averaging double figures. Taylor Pearson leads Marshall on the boards, pulling down 5.9 rebounds per game.
