BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women's basketball team renews its rivalry against Middle Tennessee on Saturday for the 75th meeting in series history. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. in E.A. Diddle Arena.
The Lady Toppers are 9-5 and 1-2 in conference play after a bounce back win against UAB on Thursday. The Lady Raiders are 10-5 and 2-1 in Conference USA.
WKU is coming off a win against UAB after a tough start to the conference season. Thursday's game was a close one, with neither team ever reaching a double-digit lead. Overall, the game had six lead changes and four ties in total. UAB had a chance to tie the game or go-ahead with 21 seconds left as WKU led by two, but a defensive stand by the Lady Toppers that resulted in a turnover on a jump ball helped WKU put the Blazers away. Alexis Brewer made good on two free throws with three seconds left to seal the win.
Dee Givens led WKU in scoring against UAB with 14 points. Three other Lady Toppers scored in double figures with Brewer putting up 13 and Whitney Creech and Meral Abdelgawad each scoring 12. Creech also had six rebounds and six assists in the game.
Middle Tennessee owns a 42-32 advantage in the series history, but the Lady Toppers have won six of the last seven and have a 22-13 advantage in Bowling Green.
The Lady Toppers are led in scoring by Raneem Elgedawy who is averaging 16.6 points per game and 9.8 rebounds. Creech is putting up 15.8 points per game and Givens is averaging 15.5.
WKU is a perfect 5-0 in Diddle Arena this season and have a seven-game winning streak going into Saturday's game.
The Lady Raiders are led in scoring by Anastasia Hayes who is averaging 17.3 points per game. Three other Middle Tennessee players are scoring in double figures in Taylor Sutton (13.4 PPG), Aislynn Hayes (12.7 PPG) and Charity Savage (10.6 PPG). On the boards, Savage is pulling down 11.6 rebounds per game.
Middle Tennessee was picked to finish second in the C-USA preseason coaches poll and WKU was picked third. The Lady Toppers are currently ranked 50th in the national RPI rankings while the Lady Raiders are ranked 47th.
