NAPOLI, Italy – Recent WKU Track & Field graduate, Getter Lemberg, represented the Hilltoppers and her home country of Estonia in the 2019 Summer Universiade in Napoli, Italy, in the women's pole vault event.
Â
Lemberg's clear of 3.75 meters was good for a tie for seventh place in her 13-competitor flight, narrowly missing the 12-person final scheduled for Thursday. The Tartu, Estonia, native's mark was good for a tie for 14th overall.
Â
This summer's Universiade is being hosted from July 3-14 with more than 8,000 athletes representing 125 countries in attendance.
Â
The Universiade is an international multi-sport event organized for university athletes from all over the world. Second only to the Olympic Games, both in importance and number of participants, the Universiade is believed to be equal, if not superior, to the Winter Olympics: this is true especially for the Summer edition of the Universiade, which has morphed, over the years, into a major international sports and cultural event. The term "Universiade", a combination of the words "University" and "Olympiad", embodies one of the concepts at the basis of every sport: universality.
Â
The Universiade, in its current form, was conceived by Italian sports official Primo Nebiolo, who organized its first edition in Turin in 1959.
