ATHENS, Ga. — WKU's Linus Lo and Stuart Easton each recorded top-10 finishes Monday at Georgia's historic Southern Intercollegiates, with Lo notching the best result of his career in a tie for third.
The redshirt junior Lo shot a pair of 1-under 71s for a 142 total in the one-day, 36-hole event held at the par-72, 6,917-yard Athens Country Club.
"I thought the course was playing very tough with the stiff breeze and quick greens," Lo said. "Despite the score, I thought everyone was very mentally tough. The event provided the team a great opportunity to fine-tune our game for conference."
The Southern Intercollegiates dates back to 1935, although the current reboot of the tournament began in 2015.
The only two players to finish ahead of Lo were South Carolina's Will Miles (No. 73 in the nation) at 136 and Scott Stevens (No. 22) at 140.
Lo and the senior Easton finished ahead of two other top-100 golfers, Georgia's Trent Phillips (No. 11 in the country) and Spencer Ralston (No. 45).
Lo finished his opening round with an eagle on the par-5 10th hole, then played a steady second round with three birdies and two bogeys. He finished third in the tournament in par-5 scoring at 6 under.
Lo's third-place finish beats his previous best of a tie for seventh at the 2019 ECU Intercollegiate this spring. He has three top-10 efforts in his last five outings.
Easton shot a 3-over 75 in his opening round but bounced back with a 4-under 68 in the finale, including seven birdies. He tied for seventh with a 143 total.
Lo and Easton's results helped WKU tie for fifth as a team in the 17-team field with a 593 total. Two of the four programs that finished ahead of the Hilltoppers are ranked in the top 20.
Redshirt senior Billy Tom Sargent tied for 40th with a 153 (76-77) total, while junior Tom Bevington tied for 56th at 156 (80-76). Sophomore Chase Landrum ended with a 160 (79-81) tally.
Up next for the Hilltoppers is the 2019 Conference USA Championship, which begins April 22 in Texarkana, Ark.
"This was a great course to help prepare us for conference," WKU head coach Chan Metts said. "There were definitely some areas where we were not as sharp as we needed to be today. One of the main points we focused on today as a team was making sure we came away from this event with a few key areas to work on this week at practice in preparing for Texarkana.
"Linus was very solid all day, and Stuart played very well in the second round. This isn't the finish we came in hoping for, but this event will make us better."
