GREENVILLE, N.C. — WKU Hilltopper Golf finished in the top four as a team for the fourth time in six events this season Tuesday, tying for third at East Carolina's ECU Intercollegiate.
The Hilltoppers tied with Jacksonville at 886 (291-294-301). Four WKU golfers finished in the top 20 individually at the par-72, 6,755-yard Brook Valley Country Club.
They were just six shots behind the champion and host, East Carolina, and four strokes behind second-place Campbell (No. 42). East Carolina, Campbell and Jacksonville are all top-100 programs. WKU also finished ahead of No. 46 Charleston and No. 99 James Madison.
"This was a great learning experience for us," WKU head coach Chan Metts said. "We put ourselves in a position to compete for a win, and that's always a goal going into every event. Even though we came up a little short, those moments are so valuable in terms of learning and improving."
Redshirt senior Billy Tom Sargent led the Hilltoppers with a tie for third at 218 (69-73-76). That's Sargent's fourth top-20 performance of the season and his second in the top three.
Redshirt junior Linus Lo tied the best result of his career by tying for seventh at 221 (73-75-73).
Junior Tom Bevington found the top 15 for the second straight event, tying for 15th with a 223 (72-75-76) tally. WKU tied for the tournament lead with 39 total birdies, led by 10 apiece from Bevington and Sargent.
Senior Stuart Easton registered his third straight top-20 effort by tying for 17th at 224 (77-71-76). Sophomore Crimson Callahan tied for 54th at 236 (82-77-77).
The Hilltoppers have almost a month off from tournament competition before returning to the course at Vanderbilt's Mason Rudolph Championship on April 5-7 in Nashville, Tenn.
"This event will make us better moving forward, because we took several things away that we know we need to improve on," Metts said. "Now we have a big break before our next event, which gives us a lot of time to work on those things."
