CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. – WKU won the top doubles match and pushed three singles matches to a third set in its 6-1 defeat at NKU on Friday evening. The Lady Tops scored their first point of the season with Kyla Dilger winning in the sixth singles spot by walkover.
Assuming their regular leading position, junior Lisa Friess and sophomore Laura Bernardos defeated a pair of NKU Norse 7-5, recording their second doubles victory of the season.
Freshman Judit Gonzalez Agud and junior Lucia Diaz Saez played at No. 2 doubles and fell 6-4. WKU lost the third doubles match by default and NKU clinched the doubles point.
Three members of the WKU squad forced third sets in their singles matches, the largest number of matches the Lady Toppers have played to three sets all season. At the second position, Friess got down after the first set 6-1. She came back with a strong 6-4 victory in the second set before falling in the third 6-4.
Spanish-native Diaz Saez competed at No. 3 and was victorious in a well-fought first set, winning 7-5. Her NKU competitor went on to win the second and third set, 6-2, 6-4, respectively. Freshman Zeniece Charles-Hall played in the fifth spot for the Lady Tops and lost her three-set match 6-7, 6-4, 4-6.
Leading Lady Topper Bernardos fell in her singles match 6-3, 6-3. Gonzalez Agud was defeated at the No. 4 spot with a score of 6-1, 7-6.
WKU (0-8, 0-2 Conference USA) is set to compete against Miami (OH) in Hamilton, Ohio, tomorrow beginning at 1:30 p.m. CT. Live stats can be found here.
