BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The non-conference portion of WKU women's basketball schedule has all but come and gone with only a midweek matchup against Purdue standing between the Lady Toppers and conference play. WKU will face the Boilermakers on Wednesday at 11 a.m. (CST) as part of an Education Day for Purdue in Mackey Arena.
The Lady Toppers are 8-2 on the season and have won three-straight games including a 2-0 record in WKU's five-game road stretch so far. Purdue is 7-3 on the season.
In their most recent outing, the Lady Toppers survived a late push by Samford on the road to win, 88-84. WKU had a 23-point lead midway through the third quarter after a well-played first half, but defensive lapses and hot shooting let the Bulldogs make a furious comeback. Samford got within three points, but veteran leadership took over for WKU and the Lady Toppers were able to put the Bulldogs away.
Whitney Creech led the Lady Toppers in the win with a career high 26 points on 10-of-10 shooting from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range. She's only the fifth Lady Topper in program history to record a perfect game with a minimum of 10 attempts. She's also on the third NCAA Division I player to record the feat this season.
Raneem Elgedawy also had 23 points in the game along with 18 points from Sherry Porter and 11 from Dee Givens.
Purdue has three players averaging double-figure points. Karissa McLaughlin is putting up 12.2 points per game. Dominique Oden and Ae'Rianna Harris are averaging 11.1 points per game.
Wednesday's meeting will be the third between WKU and Purdue. The Lady Toppers own a 2-0 record against the Boilermakers. The first matchup came on December 11, 1976 in West Lafayette where WKU won 78-60. The second meeting was the following season on December 3, 1977 in Bowling Green and WKU won 67-47.
The Lady Toppers will tip-off Conference USA play with a trip to east Texas. WKU will face North Texas on Thursday, January 2. Then WKU will take on preseason favorite and 2018-19 champion Rice in Houston on Saturday, January 4.
