BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The WKU women's basketball team continues its road stretch with a tilt against Samford in Birmingham on Sunday at 2 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
Â
The Lady Toppers are off to a 7-2 start to the season and have won two-straight games after defeating Oklahoma and Ball State last week. WKU's win against Oklahoma was the first win against a Big 12 team for the Lady Toppers since topping Texas in 1990. WKU has now beaten a Power Five team in five of the last six seasons. The win against Ball State came in overtime against a team that seemingly has had the Lady Toppers' number in recent seasons. It was the first time since 2009 WKU has won in Muncie.
Â
Samford is 3-8 on the season and most recently dropped games against fellow Conference USA opponent UAB (76-69) and Kentucky (79-49).
Â
After her 41-point performance at Ball State, Dee Givens was awarded C-USA Player of the Week and was selected to the NCAA Starting Five.
Â
Sunday will be only the second meeting between WKU and Samford. The first came during the 2011-12 season and the Lady Toppers battled for a 58-57 win in Birmingham.
Â
WKU has three players in the top five in scoring in C-USA with Givens (18.1 points per game), Raneem Elgedawy (16.1 PPG) and Whitney Creech (16.0 PPG). The Lady Toppers are one of only three teams in the country to have three players in the top five of league scoring.
Â
Creech ranks first in four different categories in C-USA this season. Her 1.81 assist/turnover ratio is tops and her 38 assists on the season are the most of any player. She's also played a league-high cumulative minutes and average.
Â
WKU as a team is averaging the most points of any C-USA team, putting up 76.9 points per game. They also lead in steals (98), turnover margin (3.78), rebound margin (6.7), offensive rebounds per game (15.8) and free throws made (139).
Â
Samford is led in scoring by Sarah Myers who is averaging 13.1 points per game and Natalie Armstrong who is putting up 12.7 points per game. Sarah Myers also leads on the rebounding front, pulling down 6.5 boards per game. Â
