WKU's 21-1 record marks the best start in program history. Twenty-one wins is the most across the NCAA to date as the squad locked up the 20th-straight 20-win season under head coach Travis Hudson. The Lady Toppers are one of five programs with an active streak of such, joined by Nebraska (44), Penn State (42), Florida (28) and Colorado State (24).
Â
Friday evening's 7 p.m. CT match in Birmingham, Ala., will be the first of two meetings between WKU and UAB this season. The Blazers enter the weekend with an 11-8 overall record including a 3-3 mark in C-USA play. Both sides have also faced Samford in non-conference play, a match WKU swept while UAB fell in four sets. In league action, the Blazers swept FIU, topped Middle Tennessee in four sets and fell to UTSA in straight sets. UAB leads the all-time series 23-10 but WKU has claimed nine of the last 10 decisions after split results against the Blazers last season.
Â
Following Friday's match in Alabama, WKU will begin its trek up to Charlotte to take on the 49ers. Charlotte owns a 13-11 reading on the season with a 2-5 record in conference play. Common opponents in non-conference play between WKU and UNCC include Eastern Kentucky and Bowling Green – a pair of squads the Tops swept – while the 49ers split results against the two. In league play, Charlotte swept Southern Miss, downed MTSU in four sets, and fell to North Texas, Florida Atlantic, FIU, Marshall and UTSA. WKU leads the all-time series 13-3 and has claimed the last 10 decisions.
Â
The Tops have collected a total of 13 C-USA Player of the Week awards, standing as the sole team to win an award every week, as well as the only team to win at least one of each award. Five different student-athletes have accounted for the 13 accolades with Nadia Dieudonne earning recognition as Co-Setter of the Week and Paige Briggs being selected as the Freshman of the Week most recently.
Â
In the third RPI of the 2019 campaign, WKU moved to No. 31 and already owns 10 wins over teams in the top 100.
Â
WKU will return home next weekend for one of its three remaining home matches. UTEP will come to town on Nov. 1 for a 6 p.m. CT tilt on The Hill. WKU will enter the match with the seventh-longest home win streak in the NCAA at 14 matches including a perfect 12-0 mark inside Diddle Arena this season.
