DELAND, Fla. – Solid wins in both doubles and singles rounds boded well for the Lady Toppers as they swept Stetson 4-0 on the Hatters' home court Wednesday morning. Stetson had earned a 5-3 mark at the Mandy Stoll Tennis Center before the Red and White completed the sweep.
WKU began play with doubles action. While keeping freshman Moka Ito and Monica Malinen in their consistent pair, sophomore Natalia De Ugarte and senior Elpida Malamou took to court two and sophomore Cindy Oest and senior Violetta Shatalova partnered up on court three.
Oest and Shatalova claimed the first Lady Topper win of the day, defeating the Stetson tandem 6-2. Ito and Malinen picked up their sixth win of the spring season with a score of 6-1, securing the doubles point for the Red and White. De Ugarte and Malamou were mid-match when the doubles point was clinched.
Finishing first in the singles round was Paraguay native Oest, sweeping her opponent 6-0, 6-0. Next to earn a win was Ito at the No. 1 spot with a final score of 7-5, 6-2. Malamou completed her match shortly after Ito, winning 7-6, 5-3 and marking the seventh victory this season for the Lady Toppers.
Shatalova, Malinen, and De Ugarte had each won one set of their match by the time WKU clinched the dual matchup.
WKU (7-3, 2-0 C-USA) will take a week off before playing at Cincinnati and at Middle Tennessee on March 23 and 25.
