CINCINNATI, Ohio – WKU was triumphant in Ohio today as the Lady Toppers picked up their sixth road win of the season. After Cincinnati won the doubles point, the Red and White rallied, winning four singles matches to clinch the overall win.
Action began with the doubles round as the Bearcats started strong, defeating sophomore duo Cindy Oest and Natalia De Ugarte 6-2. The Lady Toppers were able to battle back as freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen moved to 7-1 on the season after defeating a Cincinnati tandem 6-2.
Court two would be the deciding factor where seniors Violetta Shatalova and Elpida Malamou fell to the Bearcats 6-3 and Cincinnati clinched the doubles point.
Moving to singles play, Ito was the first to gather a point for WKU defeating a Cincinnati representative in straight sets. Malamou claimed her fifth win of the spring season, also defeating a Bearcat in straight sets. Cincinnati earned two more points, defeating Malinen and De Ugarte on courts four and five.
Paraguay native, Oest was able to tie up the match 3-3 with a three-set victory in the No. 6 spot. Shatalova was the final Lady Topper to finish, helping WKU to clinch the match after her 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win.
WKU (8-3, 2-0 C-USA) is now 2-0 in the all-time series between the two programs, the last meeting before today occurring in 1983.
The Lady Toppers will head to Murfreesboro, Tenn., to face conference rival Middle Tennessee on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. CT.
