BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Lady Topper Tennis notched its second conference win of the season after defeating UAB 4-1 early Saturday morning. WKU (5-3, 2-0 C-USA) scored the doubles point while adding three singles wins to clinch its first ever victory over the Blazers.
Doubles action kickstarted the day as freshman Moka Ito and sophomore Monica Malinen moved to an undefeated 5-0 this spring season after winning their court one match in 6-4 fashion. Seniors Elpida Malamou and Violetta Shatalova fell to UAB in a hard fought 6-4 match.
Sophomores Natalia De Ugarte and Cindy Oest notched their 26th career doubles win together as they defeated a pair of Blazers 6-1, earning the doubles point for the Red and White.
Ito is now 15-5 in her inaugural year as a Lady Topper after she defeated a UAB representative 6-2, 6-1. Malamou was defeated by a Blazer 6-3, 6-2. Malinen earned another point for WKU as she won her match 6-1, 7-5. Oest finished her court six match winning 6-3, 6-2.
De Ugarte was in the second set of her match and Shatalova was one game away from a win when WKU claimed the victory over C-USA opponent UAB.
WKU heads to DeLand, Fla., for a spring break trip to play EKU and Stetson on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
