IRVING, Texas – Raneem Elgedawy has been named the C-USA Freshman of the Week for the fourth time this season as announced by the league office on Monday afternoon, breaking a tie with Tashia Brown for the most C-USA Freshman of the Week honors in Lady Topper Basketball history.
Elgedawy turned in the most efficient week of her young career on The Hill, shooting 60 percent or better from the field in back-to-back games for the first time. The Alexandria, Egypt, native averaged 14 points and 11.5 rebounds and picked up her fourth double-double of the season against UTSA on Thursday afternoon, tallying 13 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks against the Roadrunners.
The freshman's defensive presence against UTSA was key in helping the Lady Toppers limit the Roadrunners to just 12-of-60 shooting (20.0 percent) from the field, the worst mark in a single game by a WKU opponent since the Lady Toppers held Puerto Rico's Interamerican University to 16.0 percent shooting on Dec. 20, 1993.
At Marshall on Sunday afternoon, Elgedawy netted 15 points, her most in a single game against a C-USA opponent thus far, and was 7-for-8 from the field in the best shooting effort of her career. Elgedawy also fell just shy of another double-double with nine rebounds against the Thundering Herd.
Elgedawy's Freshman of the Week honor is her fourth of the season, the most among all C-USA freshmen this year and the most by any Lady Topper in a single season since joining the conference prior to the 2014-15 campaign. The C-USA Freshman of the Year candidate's four weekly awards are also the most for any Lady Topper in a single season since Kendall Noble earned four Player of the Week awards in 2015-16.
Elgedawy and the Lady Toppers will be back in action twice this weekend as WKU closes out a three-game road swing at North Texas and Louisiana Tech. The Lady Toppers will battle the Mean Green on Friday at 7 p.m. before meeting the Lady Techsters at 2 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
