BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — WKU men's basketball signee Mitchell Robinson has accepted an invitation to this month's 2017 USA Basketball Men's U19 World Cup Team training camp.
Robinson, a 7-foot incoming five-star freshman center out of Chalmette (La.) High School, is one of 28 of the nation's top players age 19 and under who will head to the camp June 18-25 at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Invitations were issued by the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee. Athletes eligible for the team must be 19 years old or younger and U.S. citizens.
The training camp is set to begin at 6 p.m. CT June 18, with team finalists expected to be announced following practices through June 20. The 12-member team is expected to be announced June 22.
Robinson is one of 14 high school athletes headed to the camp, as well as one of six McDonald's All Americans and one of seven Naismith and MaxPreps All-Americans among that group.
After winning the 2013 and 2015 FIBA U19 World Championships, the United States will look for a third consecutive gold medal in the event July 1-9 in Cairo, Egypt.
Robinson is the first McDonald's All American in WKU history and the first from a Conference USA school since Memphis' Shaq Goodwin in 2012. He also competed in the Jordan Brand Classic and received Naismith High School Boys' All-American honorable mention honors.
Robinson averaged 25.7 points, 12.6 rebounds and six blocks per game as a senior at Chalmette and is ranked as the No. 8 prospect nationally in the 2017 class by Rivals, Scout and 247Sports. He's the Hilltoppers' highest-ranked prospect during the modern recruiting service era, as well as head coach Rick Stansbury's highest-ranked recruit during his 15 seasons as a head coach.
